Valspar: A History of Business Innovation for the Packaging Coatings Market
1850 Georget in France launches first internal can lacquer. (Acquired by Coates Coating in 1990.)
1877 Coates Brothers founded in London.
1935 Stoner - Mudge (now Valspar) protective coating makes possible first commercial beer can.
1940's Stoner - Mudge develops coatings for shell cases, military equipment, fuel storage tanks, and ration cans.
1946 Coates Brothers diversify into metal coatings for rigid packaging to support its existing Lithotin inks.
1950's Stoner - Mudge supplies coatings to all major can companies, many closure manufacturers, and metal decorators; creates first coatings for newly emerging drawn aluminum cans and steel D & I cans.
1966 Coates Coatings, then called Industrial Finishes, is formed.
1970 Valspar merges with Minnesota Linseed Oil Paint company, moves headquarters to Minneapolis and is now traded on the New York Stock Exchange as VAL.
1984 Valspar acquires MOBIL Chemical Coatings (which include Stoner - Mudge) and doubles in size.
1988 Valspar commercializes first universal coating for coil-coated beverage can ends.
1992 Valspar develops first approved universal solvent-based non-vinyl beverage end coatings.
1996 Valspar acquires Coates Coatings and establishes world presence.
1996 Valspar introduces first universal water-based, non-vinyl end coatings.
1998 Valspar acquires ANZOL PTY LTD in Australia.
1999 Valspar acquires Dexter packaging continuing its global expansion.
2001 Acquired Technical Coatings Company - a division of Benjamin Moore Paints.
